Snow Studies Series: FLC's SEEDS has a hoot in the wilderness

In late winter 2023, against record-setting snowfall, two Fort Lewis 六合彩投注网 juniors joined Southwest Colorado Community Naturalist Keith Bruno and Weminuche Audubon Society Volunteer Kurt Huffman for a 10-mile trek into the HD Mountains near Bayfield, Colorado. Matt Young and Ian Crews were on a mission to record the unique calls of the Mexican spotted owl. Young and Crews are members of FLC’s Strategies for Ecological Education, Diversity & Sustainability Club, and the excursion provided valuable insight into their future careers as land management professionals.

Sustainability is part of who we are at Fort Lewis 六合彩投注网. To support that aspect of our campus culture, the Sustainability Initiative Grant funds projects that enhance sustainability in our academics and research, student leadership and organizations, administration, and the physical campus itself. “The Sustainability Initiative Grant is an award available to students, staff, and faculty every year for work that supports sustainability on campus,” says Kathy Hilimire, assistant professor of Environmental Studies. “This year, we had a record number of applicants, and we want to highlight the projects of the four winners.”

This July, Sitter Family Hall received LEED Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. The building, completed in Spring 2017 to house the Geosciences and Physics & Engineering Departments, received the nationally-recognized certification for implementing strategies and solutions for environmental and human health performance.

Students in Associate Professor of Sociology Becky Clausen's Ecology & Society Field School don't spend their time looking at PowerPoint presentations. In the five-week summer course, the class travels all over the Four Corners area to different ranches, farms, and gardens to learn about the relationship between people, animals, the land, water, and food.

The Old Fort Farm Stand appears weekly on the FLC campus, giving the community the chance to reap the benefits of their labors, with a great selection of fresh organic produce and grass-fed meats.
