In late winter 2023, against record-setting snowfall, two Fort Lewis 六合彩投注网 juniors joined Southwest Colorado Community Naturalist Keith Bruno and Weminuche Audubon Society Volunteer Kurt Huffman for a 10-mile trek into the HD Mountains near Bayfield, Colorado. Young and Crews are members of FLC’s Strategies for Ecological Education, Diversity & Sustainability Club, and the excursion provided valuable insight into their future careers as land management professionals.

More than 400 FLC students graduated on May 6 at a ceremony addressed by Thomas J. Vilsack, the 32nd United States Secretary of Agriculture. 

Members of Fort Lewis 六合彩投注网’s Strategies for Ecological Education, Diversity & Sustainability Club, or SEEDS, traveled to Puerto Pe帽asco, Mexico, for a student-led study abroad experience to shed light on the ecological diversity of a destination typically known for its pineapple drinks and banana boats.

The FLC Environmental Center announced the winners of the inaugural Sustainability Superhero Award Winners at the Center’s 5th annual Sustainability Summit, on February 20. The award is a salute to leaders in sustainability efforts and advocacy both on campus and in the Durango community.

Sustainability is part of who we are at Fort Lewis 六合彩投注网. To support that aspect of our campus culture, the Sustainability Initiative Grant funds projects that enhance sustainability in our academics and research, student leadership and organizations, administration, and the physical campus itself. “The Sustainability Initiative Grant is an award available to students, staff, and faculty every year for work that supports sustainability on campus,” says Kathy Hilimire, assistant professor of Environmental Studies. “This year, we had a record number of applicants, and we want to highlight the projects of the four winners.”

Local First's new Durango Food Recovery Hub, which collaborates with the FLC Environmental Center, just received a three-year, $356,000 grant. It will become a combination clearinghouse, distribution center, and resource center for connecting unwanted food with businesses and consumers who will use it.

This July, Sitter Family Hall received LEED Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. The building, completed in Spring 2017 to house the Geosciences and Physics & Engineering Departments, received the nationally-recognized certification for implementing strategies and solutions for environmental and human health performance.

Students in Associate Professor of Sociology Becky Clausen's Ecology & Society Field School don't spend their time looking at PowerPoint presentations. In the five-week summer course, the class travels all over the Four Corners area to different ranches, farms, and gardens to learn about the relationship between people, animals, the land, water, and food.

“Food is everything,” says Aolani Peiper, a freshman at Fort Lewis 六合彩投注网 and the coordinator for the Real Food Challenge team. “And students can make a difference just by what they eat.” Now, the entire campus community can make an even bigger difference through the Vote Real campaign.

In addition to the reduction of CO2, FLC has saved nearly 3 million kwh of electricity, over 200,000 ccf of natural gas, and 6.4 million gallons of water.

The Old Fort in Hesperus, 20 miles west of Durango and the original site of Fort Lewis 六合彩投注网, provides a place for students to get their hands dirty learning about sustainable food production. The Old Fort Farm Stand appears weekly on the FLC campus, giving the community the chance to reap the benefits of their labors, with a great selection of fresh organic produce and grass-fed meats.
